Options to pull dredge from boat listed most convenient to least convenient. these all work but depends on what your budget is and what is available to you .
- Electric, while this is the easiest this is not the most economical for those new to dredge fishing or in a smaller boat
- Electric or Manual down rigger with swivel base and 3-4 foot boom to get it in cleaner water. (refer to last picture in this listing for reference.)This is highly effective and more economical way to dredge fish, I personally began dredge fishing and did so for 10 years with a manual down rigger. This is a great investment and will allow you room to move up in dredge size in the future if you desire all the way up to full size squid dredge . Set up an a simple A frame pulley system to gain a mechanical advantage. This requires the use of a quality harken pulley. Load your down rigger with #400 pound test. from your down rigger pass your main line through a pulley and dead end this line about 2/3 of way down your dredge boom to a swivel that is already crimped onto the dredge boom. then take a 2 foot section of #400 mono and crimp one end to the pulley and the other end to a #1000 pound cork screw. Repeat this step again so you have 2 pieces of line attached to the pulley and to same cork screw (this acts as a safety so if one line becomes fatigued or chafed and breaks you have another line to prevent you from losing your dredge completely). This cork screw with then get attached to the top of your dredge weight. attach the back of the dredge weight to the top of the dredge bar hub with another 1000 pound cork screw (again double up the line from the back of the dredge weight to the other cork screw as another safety measure so you don't lose your dredge) and you're ready to start dredge fishing.
Pull kit read below how to build and pull dredge
- How to pull a small boat dredge/make your own pull kit (see last photo in this listing for reference) (this kit is not included in this bundle)
- If your looking for a simple way to pull your dredge and raise more pelagic without breaking the bank this is the set up for you
- Supplies
- You will need 50 feet of 550 pound paracord
- A yoyo for storage
- #400-#500 pound mono (18 inches pieces)
- (3) 1000 Pound cork screw swivels
- 4 pound fish weight
- Building
- tie one of the #1000 pound corkscrews to one end of the paracord
- take your heavy mono and crimp the line to another cork screw. repeat this step twice so you have 2 pieces of heavy mono the same length attached to the same corkscrew. This acts as a safety in case one lines becomes fatigued or accidentally gets nicked preventing you from losing your dredge
- Crimp the other end of each piece of line to your third cork screw so you have a corkscrew on each side of the mono.
- when ready to fish attach the cork screw with the paracord to the top of the fish weight. attache one corkscrew with the mono on the back of the fish weight and the other corkscrew to your dredge bar hub.
- Tie the dredge off to the cleat then let it out slowly, adjust length if needed to keep dredge subsurface.
